ABSTRACT
Behind every laser engraver is a maker with a vision — one shaped by creativity, curiosity, and a desire to build something meaningful. Today, we’re proud to share the story of Olivier Choteau, a woodworking enthusiast from France, who turned his idea for custom wooden lamps into a growing handcrafted brand using the LONGER B1 40W.
In June 2024, Olivier Choteau stood at a turning point. With a background in DIY woodworking and a long-time interest in design, he began sketching ideas for personalized wooden lamps — pieces that could offer not just light, but warmth and character to a space.
Living in a small town in western France, Olivier didn’t have a large workshop or staff. What he had was a corner in his garage, a workbench, and a growing passion to create with more precision. That’s when he started researching laser engravers.
After comparing different machines, Olivier landed on the LONGER B1 40W. It stood out to him for its high-powered diode laser, generous work area, and availability of an extension kit to handle larger formats. For someone building both functional and decorative items, this flexibility was key.
“I knew I needed something strong enough to cut thick wood in one pass,” Olivier explained. “The B1 gave me that — and more.”
With the B1, he could cut solid plywood and engrave custom patterns with sharp clarity. He no longer had to sand down rough cuts or waste material on second passes. It simplified his workflow and raised the quality of his pieces.
Olivier had never used a laser engraver before, and the learning curve was real. But with time, trial and error, and the support of online communities, he gradually found his rhythm. From adjusting speeds and power settings to testing different wood finishes, each project taught him something new.
He soon launched his brand, Grav’décobois (a play on words combining “engraving” and “decorative wood”), offering handcrafted wooden lamps engraved with names, nature motifs, or geometric patterns.
In just a few months, Olivier went from testing scrap wood to fulfilling paid orders for custom gifts, small interior design boutiques, and local events. By the end of the year, he had made around €1,000 in revenue — a modest number, but a meaningful sign of momentum.
“It’s not just about the money,” he said. “It’s the satisfaction of seeing people smile when they receive something unique.”
Today, Olivier continues to expand his offerings — from table lamps to engraved wall art and decorative panels. His goal is not mass production, but slow, thoughtful craftsmanship. Each piece is made-to-order, and every design is considered.
He credits the LONGER B1 40W for helping him stay consistent. The machine’s reliable performance has allowed him to focus more on creative design, finishing details, and customer experience, rather than worrying about technical hiccups.
“I still discover new ways to use it. You don’t need to rush. Explore and experiment — the B1 has more power than you think.”
Olivier’s story is a beautiful reminder that creativity doesn’t require a giant workshop or a big budget — just the right mix of passion, patience, and the proper tools. Whether you’re crafting for business or for joy, the journey of making something with your own hands is always rewarding.
At LONGER, we’re proud to be part of Olivier’s journey and can’t wait to see how Grav’décobois continues to evolve. We believe that every creative deserves tools that match their ambition — and stories like Olivier’s inspire us to keep building for the makers who dream big, even from a small garage.
