ABSTRACT
Leather engraving is a highly creative craft that adds personalized designs to wallets, belts, book covers, and other handmade items. With its high precision and portability, the Nano Pro laser engraver is an ideal tool for leather engraving. This guide provides a detailed walkthrough on how to engrave leather using the Nano Pro, including equipment setup, design configuration, parameter adjustments, and practical tips.
1. Preparation
① Equipment and Materials
Device: Nano Pro Laser Engraver
Software: LightBurn
Material: Synthetic leather (Note: May emit hazardous gases during engraving; wear a mask)
Additional Tools:
Tape: To secure the leather and prevent shifting
Air Purifier: To reduce harmful fumes and maintain air quality
3. Engraving Parameter Settings
The quality of leather engraving is influenced by laser power and speed settings. In LightBurn:
Select your design and open the Cut/Layer settings.
Double-click the layer assigned to the artwork.
Set the mode to Fill, and enable Constant Power Mode.
Adjust the settings as follows:
Line Interval: 0.06 mm
Speed: 10000 mm/min
Max Power: 50%
(Note: Excessive power can cause burning or melting of the leather.)
⚠️ Tip: Test settings on a small leather scrap before full-scale engraving to account for variations in leather type and thickness.
4. Engraving Process
① Secure the Leather
Lay the leather flat in the Nano Pro's working area. Use tape to fix all four corners to prevent movement or curling during engraving.
② Adjust Focus
Adjust the laser head’s focus so that it is correctly distanced from the leather surface. The Nano Pro is equipped with an adjustable Z-axis; use the lift switch to achieve focus.
③ Turn on the Air Purifier
Aim the purifier hose toward the leather (outside of the engraving area).
Connect power and turn on the side switch.
Rotate the knob on the front lower-right corner clockwise to the On position.
The green indicator light will illuminate.
Continue turning the knob to increase airflow as needed.
④ Positioning
Use the "Frame" function in LightBurn to preview the engraving area. Adjust the design size and position to ensure it fits within the engravable region of the leather.
⑤ Start Engraving
Click the "Start" button in LightBurn. The laser will begin engraving according to the configured parameters.
Monitor the engraving process to ensure even operation and avoid overheating.
⑥ Post-Engraving
After the engraving is complete, inspect the result. Gently clean the surface if necessary.
Conclusion
Engraving leather with the Nano Pro laser engraver is a precise and rewarding process. By properly preparing your materials, configuring your design in LightBurn, and fine-tuning engraving parameters, you can achieve clean, professional results. Always test on scrap leather before full production, and ensure good ventilation during operation. With the right setup and care, the Nano Pro makes it easy to add custom, high-quality details to any leather project.
