Power vs Speed Test with LaserGRBL for Longer Ray5 & B1
Power vs Speed Test with LaserGRBL for Longer Ray5 & B1

The LONGER Ray5 and LONGER B1 laser engravers are capable of engraving and cutting a wide range of materials with high precision and efficiency. However, achieving optimal results requires careful adjustment of processing parameters—particularly laser power and engraving speed, as different materials respond uniquely to laser energy.

Understanding Material Response to Laser Settings

Materials react differently when exposed to laser energy. For metals in particular, variations in power output and movement speed can significantly affect the engraving outcome.

By fine-tuning these parameters, users can achieve different surface oxidation levels and heat effects, which can produce subtle color variations on metal surfaces. This controlled thermal interaction is the foundation of multicolor laser engraving on metal, a technique widely used in decorative and industrial applications.

Both the LONGER Ray5 (5W) and LONGER B1 are capable of metal engraving. However, the B1 offers superior stability and higher power capability, making it more suitable for advanced applications such as multicolor metal engraving.

Using LaserGRBL for Parameter Optimization

To achieve precise and repeatable results, LaserGRBL provides a built-in tool called Power vs Speed Test, which allows users to quickly identify optimal engraving parameters for specific materials.

Step 1: Access the Power vs Speed Test Tool

From the LaserGRBL main interface:

Select:

Generate → Power vs Speed Test

This will open the parameter configuration window.

Step 2: Configure Power Settings

LaserGRBL uses a scaled power system:

  • S-10 = 1% power
  • S-1000 = 100% power

For testing purposes, it is recommended to define a power range such as:

  • Minimum: 100
  • Maximum: 1000
  • Step size: 10

This allows fine-grained control over laser output for accurate material testing.

Step 3: Configure Speed Settings

Next, define engraving speed based on material type:

  • Wood: approximately 3000–9000 mm/min
  • Metal & steel: approximately 100–1500 mm/min

A recommended configuration is to use 7 steps for balanced testing coverage.

Step 4: Set Line Density (Quality)

The engraving resolution can be adjusted using line density settings:

  • Recommended range: 8000–12000 lines/mm

Higher values result in finer detail but longer processing time.

Step 5: Generate the Test File

After configuring parameters, click:

“Create!”

LaserGRBL will generate a test pattern combining multiple power and speed combinations for evaluation.

Step 6: Export and Run the Test

To proceed:

  1. Select File → Save (Advanced Option)
  2. Export the generated file as G-code
  3. Transfer it to a microSD card or device storage
  4. Run the test on the LONGER Ray5 or B1

Alternatively, the test can also be executed directly via USB connection using the Cutting Test mode, if preferred.

Step 7: Analyze Results and Optimize Settings

After completion, carefully inspect the engraved test pattern. The variations in tone, depth, and clarity will help determine the most suitable combination of power and speed for your specific material and desired effect.

This calibration process is essential for achieving consistent high-quality results, especially in advanced applications such as metal marking and multicolor engraving.

Conclusion

By leveraging the Power vs Speed Test in LaserGRBL, users of the LONGER Ray5 and B1 can efficiently identify optimal engraving parameters for different materials. While both machines are capable of metal engraving, the B1 provides enhanced performance and stability, making it the preferred choice for precision-driven and multicolor metal engraving applications.

LONGER Test: Cutting images with LaserGRBL and Longer Laser B1 & Ray5

Longer Laser B1 and Longer Ray5 are laser engravers capable of engraving and cutting multiple types of materials. In particular, many users of Longer Laser B1 and Ray5 prefer to carry out engraving and cutting using Lightburn, however others prefer to use LaserGRBL as it is free software. In particular, LaserGRBL is a software more optimized for laser engraving, with a good processing capacity of the images to be engraved, however, although with some limitations, it also allows you to convert image files into ".svg" vector files, so that you can make laser cuts starting from a graphic image.

After opening an image in LaserGRBL, proceed to set the engraving parameters in the window on the center of the screen.

In detail, change the Brightness and Contrast parameters, so that the image takes on a color tone tending to black.

After setting the engraving parameters, click with mouse on "Vectorize!", then eventually adjust Brightness and Contrast if necessary. Once done, click "Next".

In the screen that opens, define the cutting parameters, such as speed, power, and size. Once done, click "Create!". Remember that, depending on the speed and power set, an engraving or a cut will be made, always based on the same vector file.

At this point, the file will be ready to run. Save Gcode to export the working file to the microSD of Longer Laser B1 and Ray5, then proceed to start working on Longer Laser B1 and Ray5. Alternatively, you can connect Longer Laser B1 and Ray5 via USB cable to LaserGRBL to do the job directly.

In this way, Longer Ray5 will cut or engrave the selected image, following the vectorial perimeter set above.

LONGER Test: Fan Cleaning for Longer Laser B1
LONGER Test: Fan Cleaning for Longer Laser B1

Longer Laser B1 20W & 30W & 40W has a laser module that can engrave and cut various types of materials. However, depending on the type of work being done, it is possible that a fair amount of smoke and wood dust will be produced, which will inevitably settle on the laser module's fan and suck into it. In fact, due to the high power of the laser beam, the laser module tends to heat up and for this reason it is necessary that there is a high-speed cooling fan; However, during its operation, the fan sucks in the surrounding air, and if the air is rich in smoke and dust produced during engraving, inevitably the fan and laser module will soon be filled with smoke and dust as well. When the laser module is saturated with dirt, cooling becomes ineffective, so it is necessary to proceed to clean the laser module.

To proceed with the cleaning of the laser module of the Longer  Laser B1 20W & 30W & 40W, it is first necessary to completely disassemble the laser module from the rest of the machine. Therefore, disconnect the power cable of the laser module, plus remove the connection with the air assist, and finally physically remove the laser module from the rest of the machine.

Once the laser module has been disconnected from the rest of the machine, using a compressor or a can of compressed air, it is necessary to gently blow air inside the laser module, from top to bottom through the fan opening, and from bottom to top. During the operation, it is necessary to hold the fan steady, using a small allen wrench, as the compressed air may cause the fan to spin empty, causing damage to the laser module. In addition, it is necessary to use a compressor or a can of low-pressure compressed air, as too high an air pressure could damage the components inside the laser module; Therefore, be very careful!

When all dirt has been removed from the laser module and the optimal condition has been visually restored, then you can finish cleaning and proceed with reassembly. Therefore, you can now install the laser module on the machine, then connect the power cable of the laser module, and also connect the air assist tube.

At this point, the cleaning operation has been completed, so you can proceed to make a test incision in order to verify that everything is working properly. Periodically clean the laser module to ensure optimal operation of the Longer Laser B1, and remember to always use low-pressure compressed air during all cleaning operations.
